David, I will miss you. Will miss the communication. Star of bryology as well as heaven. Will definitely finish our collaborative work. You will be missed badly. May God bless your family members.

A true honour to join with you today to celebrate David’s life, and a privilege to have been a beneficiary of David’s knowledge, kindness and generosity. Thanks David. Best wishes to all. Perpetua Turner (Blanks).

It was such a privilege to meet David and become friends during our time together at the Arthur Rylah Institute. We made so much home brew and fruit wine together.
I’m just remenicsing about the crosswords we used to do on sundays.
I wish I could have been there today, I’m watching this from a winery in Hobart where I’m making sparkling wine and having happy memories about David
What an amazing life and an extraordinary contribution to the world. Such an honour to have known David. My heart breaks for you Janine, and David’s family, he had so much more to give. My thoughts are with you, Sharon

David was a wonderful, clever, funny, generous man, who always had a checky sparkle in his eye and was so full of life. He made a huge contribution to the Arthur Rylah Institute where he regularly edited our published reports. For many years he and his good mate Phil ran the annual Koala Cup, with David the trivia master of the fun night of biodiversity related trivia. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

David was a man with many wide-ranging interests: we are so fortunate and thankful that Cricket was one of them.

I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to be mentored by David over the years and the enthusiasm by which he welcomed me into the bryophyte world. I thank him for his generosity in sharing his knowledge, his humour and his kindness. A beautiful service which he would have loved. My condolences to Janine, Zoe, Andrew and Alexander during this difficult time. Megan Grixti, Cairns QLD.

Such a heartbreaking loss and an extraordinary life. I worked closely with David at GML and was privileged to learn so much from him over the years. I’ll always remember his generosity in sharing his immense knowledge (quite often dispensed with a pun, witticism or funny cartoon).
Thank you for livestreaming this beautiful service. Sending my thoughts and deepest condolences to Janine, his children and his family.

A lovely gentle tribute to a great ‘bush mate’. Fond memories of numerous Prom trips when assisting him on the book. What a treat it was to do crossword puzzles while on the long trip to/from Tidal River, then staying in the Melb Uni lodge for field outings…a wholehearted person who loved nature like I did…
Martin, David’s ‘Prom birdo’ colleague.

It was a beautiful ceremony and I’m so very sorry for the family’s loss. I learnt much from David and am glad he encouraged me to do editing and publishing at RMIT too so many years ago… We had many a laugh over the years and I appreciated his intelligence and his unique personality. Lots of love to his family xx

This was such a lovely albeit heart-breaking tribute to David. What a special person he was – intellect, kindness, athleticism, creativity – so many strings to his bow. It is so terribly sad that he is gone, way way too soon.
We started our PhDs on the same day in the same lab. David helped me with a good deal of my field work, taught me how to use proper formatting in Word for my thesis (sounds dull but is really a useful skill!), proof read my writing, and annoying corrected my grammar too often when it didn’t matter! He was super competitive at Scrabble and would let never my kids win or even come close. You can blame me for the banjo playing, and rest assured the old dollhouse is being lovingly restored.
My deepest condolences to all the family and to Janine for such a loss.
